Planning the Welsh 3000s

The Welsh 3000s crosses the Yr Wyddfa, Glyderau and Carneddau ranges, taking in 15 summits above 3,000 feet. Its length, exposed scrambling and repeated high ground make a single valley forecast inadequate for choosing a day.

The combined grade is deliberately conservative and gives extra weight to the weakest summit. Review every row, especially Crib Goch and Tryfan, and use the full peak pages for timing and hazard detail.

Best time of year for the Welsh 3000s

Balance the historical rain-and-wind pattern with daylight, snow and the demands of the route. This is seasonal context, not a forecast for your chosen date.

May, June and July lead the seasonal comparison

These months have the highest average share of settled rain-and-wind days across the challenge's represented areas within our May-to-September planning comparison. Small percentage differences are not a reliable reason to choose one week over another.

The Welsh 3000s combines a long day with exposed scrambling. A settled rain-and-wind month does not tell you whether Crib Goch or Tryfan will be dry, clear or free of ice on your chosen day. BMC route context.

Context for 15 challenge summits

Snowdon - Yr Wyddfa, Crib y Ddysgl (Garnedd Ugain), Crib Goch, Elidir Fawr, Y Garn, Glyder Fawr, Glyder Fach, Tryfan, Pen yr Ole Wen, Carnedd Dafydd, Carnedd Llewelyn, Yr Elen, Foel Grach, Carnedd Gwenllian (Garnedd Uchaf), Foel-fras. Shared regional context does not imply identical summit conditions.

Explore monthly weather and cottages

Based on our ERA5-derived regional mountain climate summaries, 1986 to 2025. Each distinct area counts once, so several peaks sharing a sample do not multiply its influence. These monthly summaries do not measure how often all summits were settled on the same day. Explore the mountain climate guide.
