Latest observation

Around 800 m

Provisional webcam estimate, above sea level. The camera-facing slopes, not the whole mountain.

Useful context for the view now, not a promise that cloud will stay at this height. Compare it with the forecast before heading out.

From photograph to cloud height

We match the camera view to a LiDAR terrain model, then look for where visible hillside gives way to cloud. Known ground heights turn that contact into an approximate height above sea level.

Clear reference view of Snowdon / Yr Wyddfa
1. Establish the clear view. 19 June 2025: visible ridges provide a reference for the Snowdon camera. A clear mountain does not mean a cloudless sky.
Shaded LiDAR terrain reconstruction from the Lodge Dinorwig camera viewpoint
2. Reconstruct the ground. The fitted camera projects the terrain into the same view. Shading brings out the ridges and slopes; it is illustrative lighting, not observed sunshine. This is a bare-earth model: trees and buildings are not represented.

3. Read the cloudy scene. 14 September 2026, 18:29 BST. The image is assessed independently of the weather forecast. Foreground slopes, haze and wisps can make the cloud contact hard to place.
Snowdon / Yr Wyddfa cloud analysis overlay for the same cloudy example
4. Estimate the contact height. Around 600 m in this example. The overlay marks assessed terrain and candidate cloud contacts; it is not a traced outline of every cloud. 14 September 2026, 18:29 BST.

Selected examples to explain the process, not an accuracy test or current conditions. Photographs are resized for display; analysis overlays are added by Mountain Weather. All heights remain provisional until independently checked.

Height-coloured terrain and camera-visible ground points around Lodge Dinorwig and Snowdon / Yr Wyddfa
The view from Lodge Dinorwig. The camera looks roughly south-southeast. East is on the left of the photograph, west on the right. Coloured points show ground mapped in the camera image, grouped from left to right across the photograph. Background colour follows terrain height. North is up; camera positions are approximate. A sharp edge is easier to locate; a soft or diffuse edge is less distinct. Above visible tops means the mapped slopes appear clear, but the camera may not resolve the summit itself. Haze, mist, rain on the lens and changing light can all complicate the view. No estimate means no usable height, not a clear sky. Downloads keep missing values empty and include any available mist and confidence flags. They contain all retained readings for the day, not a guarantee of continuous coverage.
