From photograph to cloud height

We match the camera view to a LiDAR terrain model, then look for where visible hillside gives way to cloud. Known ground heights turn that contact into an approximate height above sea level.

1. Establish the clear view. 25 August 2026: the visible Tryfan skyline provides a reference for this camera position. A clear mountain does not mean a cloudless sky.

2. Reconstruct the ground. The fitted camera projects the terrain into the same view. Shading brings out the ridges and slopes; it is illustrative lighting, not observed sunshine. This is a bare-earth model: trees and buildings are not represented.

3. Read the cloudy scene. 15 September 2026, 17:00 BST. The image is assessed independently of the weather forecast. Foreground slopes, haze and wisps can make the cloud contact hard to place.

A sharp edge is easier to locate; a soft or diffuse edge is less distinct. Above visible tops means the mapped slopes appear clear, but the camera may not resolve the summit itself. Haze, mist, rain on the lens and changing light can all complicate the view. No estimate means no usable height, not a clear sky. Downloads keep missing values empty and include any available mist and confidence flags. They contain all retained readings for the day, not a guarantee of continuous coverage.
